To complete this job, you will need a few materials and tools. First, you will need a pump. A 1/10th horsepower pump is recommended, and you can find one on Amazon for around $40. You will also need pliers, a screwdriver or drill with a Phillips attachment, a ladder, a replacement filter for the scale cutter, a bucket (preferably 5 gallons), and 4 gallons of food-grade white vinegar.
We will begin by replacing the filter on the scale cutter. Start by closing the valve for the water from the outside of the house to the inside. Then, close the valve for the cold water. Unplug the water heater from the wall and allow it to cool off. Next, unscrew the piece that connects the scale cutter to the water heater. Remove the O-ring and replace it with a new one. Drain the water from the tube into a bucket. Clean the filter with hot water and dish soap, then place the new filter in the scale cutter. Finally, reattach the scale cutter to the water heater.
Next, we will move on to flushing the Rai tankless water heater. Start by removing the faceplate and cleaning out any dust or debris with compressed air. Once the faceplate is back on, it’s time to flush the system. Turn off the cold and hot valves, and disconnect the hoses. Connect the pump to the water heater, with one hose going into the cold service plug and the other hose going into a bucket. Fill the bucket with 4 gallons of vinegar. Open the service valves and plug in the pump. Let the vinegar circulate through the system for 1 hour. After an hour, unplug the pump and close the service valve on the cold side. Run cold water through the system for 5 minutes to flush out the vinegar. Finally, close the service valve on the hot side and remove the inline filter.
That’s it! You have successfully changed the scale cutter and tankless water heater flush. This process took about an hour and a half, but it is something you can easily do at home.
